Horse racing oddity: jockey misjudges distanceMay 20, 2012 For some reason I find oddities like this May 16, 2004 race very entertaining. The Hasta la Vista Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona is run at what today is an unusually long distance of 1 7/8 miles. This requires two full circuits of the course, rather than the usual one time around in most races. Unfortunately for jockey Jorge Carreno, he forgets that minor detail, creating a very unusual sitation. On a personal note, in the early 1980s, I recall Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez falling victim to the same mental lapse in the 2 1/4 mile Display Handicap at Aqueduct. My father and I got a big kick out of the fans watching the replay cheering "come on Georgie" the first time around, as he was furiously whipping and driving despite having a mile left to run.

Worst Horse Racing Accident I've ever seenMay 18, 2012 On February 29th, 2012, in the 8th race at Charlestown Racetrack. A filly named Sharp Beauty brokedown causing a severe chain reaction that results in every horse losing its rider except #3 Miss Fifty, skillfully ridden by veteran jockey Oswald Pereira. Horse racing oddity: incredible stretch runMay 20, 2012 Donnaguska, a first time starter owned by Billy Hays and trained by Joe Woodard, makes a remarkable stretch run to win her debut by two and a quarter lengths at Hawthorne Race Course on October 23, 2008. As track announcer Peter Galassi noted, Donnaguska was "far, far, far, far back" early under jockey Israel Ocampo. The three-year-old daughter of Yonaguska was sent off at 17-1, the second longest shot in the field of nine. She is number three, but for most of the video that doesn't matter because you won't see her. According to the official chart she was about 23 1/2 lengths behind at the top of the stretch, meaning she ran her final quarter-mile in roughly :21 1/5.

The new economics of horse racing are making an always-dangerous game even more so, as lax oversight puts animal and rider at risk. Race officials have always done their best to hide fatal breakdowns, erecting screens around fallen horses and then refusing to disclose the tracks' accident rates. Since 2009, the incident rate has not only failed to go down, it has risen slightly. A state-by-state survey by The Times shows that about 3600 horses died racing or training at state-regulated tracks over the last three years. www.nytimes.com

The Heartbeat of Ontario Horse RacingMay 11, 2012 In light of the recent announcement from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, that it plans to end the province-wide Slots at Racetracks program in March 2013, the following two and a half minute video was created to illustrate the wide range of people who will be dramatically affected by this decision. Of the more than 60000 people involved directly or indirectly with horse racing in Ontario, here are just a few of the individuals that make up the heartbeat of Ontario's vital and valuable industry. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan has been falsely referring to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Slots at Racetrack revenue sharing program as a subsidy. His claim is that the Government has been providing a $345 million annual subsidy to Ontario's Horse Racing Industry. In a recent fundraising email to supporters, the Ontario Liberal Party suggested that they are "choosing to support our youngest learners over wealthy race track owners". According to OLG's financial statements, the Government of Ontario is receiving $1.1 billion per year from the Slots at Racetracks Program. The horse racing industry, which has made space available to OLG slots and allowed competition between the slots and horse racing at their facilities, receives only 20% of the revenue from the slots. The Government walks away with 75% of the slots revenue and host municipalities receive 5%.
